This particular coin honors The El Yunque National Park in Puerto Rico. The area now known as El Yunque was originally protected by King Alfonso XII of Spain when Puerto Rico was under Spanish control. Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898 and the forest has remained under federal protection since then. These strikes mark the eleventh out of fifty-six that are eventually to be issued by the Mint as part of its America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin® series. The obverse of the bullion and quarter dollar coins will have a portrait of the first President of the United States George Washington on them. On the reverse of the El Yunque coins, a portion of the national forest will be featured. Design candidates for El Yunque should appear from the US Mint sometime in early 2011. At this time, they will be available for review by the Citizen's Coinage Advisory Committee and the Commission of Fine Arts who have been authorized to provide official critique on possible upcoming coins from the Mint. Weight: 5 Troy Ounces Diameter: 76.20 mm. Thickness: 4.064 mm. The coin will come in a Air-Tite Type Plastic Capsule.
