The creation of the Goldback relies on 5th generation vacuum deposition technology. The designs are printed on a sheet of polymer that is then bombarded with the correct amount of atomized gold particles in a vacuum chamber. This gold is then sealed inside by a second protective barrier of polymer, thus creating a beautiful negative image. Valaurum has been developing the process for nearly two decades and it has never been counterfeited. The Roman goddess Veritas is featured on the obverse. Representing the virtue of truth in Roman mythology, Veritas was frequently depicted holding a lantern as a symbolic guide in the journey to truth and enlightenment. In this portrayal Veritas also holds books of scriptures and a compass, referencing the truths followed by pioneers who settled in the Utah territory. Inscriptions include "FIVE UTAH GOLDBACKS," "VOLUNTARY LOCAL CURRENCY" and "1/200 TROY OUNCE 24K GOLD."

The reverse is undecorated, with a mirror image of the obverse design clearly visible.
